Write words which have the opposite meaning. Follow the example.

Joven
Alto
Mucho
Tonto

Caro
Guapo
Calor
Gordo

Words are composed of syllables. A syllable is a vocal sound forming a whole word, or part of it, and containing one vowel-sound. A Spanish word can have one syllable (sol, flor, mar, etc...) two syllables (ca-sa, ro-sa, li-bro, etc...) or three or more syllables (man-za-na, bi-ci-cle-ta, in-te-li-gen-te).

Some syllables are pronounced with more intensity than others. These are the emphasised or stressed syllables. The mark, which appears in a word's written form and which indicates where the pronunciation stress falls is called a tilde in Spanish. It is always written above the vowels.

Whether a word has a 'tilde' or not could change its meaning.

Example: te (pronoun) / (noun) Si tienes sed te puedo dar un para beber. - If you're thirsty, I can give you some tea to drink.

Now write the opposites from the previous exercise and divide the words into syllables. Follow the example.

Jo-ven
Al-to
Mu-cho
Ton-to

Ca-ro
Gua-po
Ca-lor
Gor-do

Now listen to the previous words and notice where the pronunciation stress falls. Try to repeat the words with the same emphasis on the stressed syllable.

joven / viejo / alto / bajo / mucho / poco / tonto / inteligente
caro / barato / guapo / feo / calor / frío / gordo / delgado

Listen to the following words and notice the way they are pronounced.

Abogado

Bocadillo

Problema

Lavabo

Lavadora

Volante

Nevera

Vajilla

In Spanish, the letters "b" and "v" are pronounced the same.

There are rules which explain when a word is written with the letter "b" or "v". However, they are a little complicated to study at the moment. Make a note of new words in your vocabulary notebook. This will help you to remember the spelling.

FIESTAS ESPAÑOLAS
Spanish Fiestas

MOROS Y CRISTIANOS - Moors and Christians

Spain was ruled by the Muslims for hundreds of years. During the Reconquest era many battles were fought between Christian and Muslim armies.
The Moors and Christians fiesta is mainly celebrated in the Levante area of Spain and the festival stands out for being colourful and spectacular. Its origin dates back to the Middle Ages and includes a ritual of parades, gunpowder and period costumes. The fiestas in the town of Alcoy are especially famous.

CARNAVALES DE CÁDIZ - The Carnivals of Cadiz

Thousands of Spaniards enjoy themselves every year during these days full of music, wine and fun. To the background of brass bands, locals perform political satire and make fun of well-known national and international personalities who have figured in the most entertaining events of the year.
The streets and squares of the city itself are the venues during the carnival. The participants are the people, whose many colourful costumes are full of inventiveness, wit and originality. It's all this that creates the carnival atmosphere which so captivates the visitors and the people of Cadiz who have enjoyed the festival since their childhood.

LAS FALLAS - The Fallas Festival

The fallas are realistic monuments composed of one or two gigantic figures surrounded by groups of smaller figures or “ninots”. The main fallas can reach more than twenty metres in height. Each falla has a particular theme which is explained in the scenes and groups of "ninots" (or puppets) which surround it.
Many local feasts and parties are organised around these monuments, in which gunpowder plays a major role. Events such as the offering of flowers to "la Virgen de los Desamparados" (the Helpless Virgin) colour the city. The fiesta attracts thousands of visitors from all around the world and during it the population of Valencia can easily double.

LA SEMANA SANTA - Easter

La Semana Santa (the holy week) is a religious festival which has a great tradition in Spain. The most devout of the population march in step dressed in white tunics and carrying religious figures which represent the passion of Christ. The processions of Andalucia stand out for their light and colour, as do those of Castilla for their austerity and silence.

SANFERMINES - The San Fermin Festival

One of the most famous events of  "los Sanfermines" is "el encierro" (the bull-pen or the corralling of the bulls), which consists of a race through the streets of Pamplona in front of the bulls, and which ends inside the bull ring. Los encierros take place every day between the 7th and the14th of July.
The origins of Los Sanfermines date back many centuries, although its worldwide fame is a relatively recent phenomenon. The North American writer Ernest Hemingway was one of those who have contributed to its popularity through his book Fiesta.

- Remember to take notes when you study. This will help you to remember the material better, and allow you to revise whenever you have free time.
If you use a small notebook, you can carry it with you and revise whenever you have spare moments during the day.

- Try not to learn too much in one day and not to leave too much time between each study period. You will benefit more if the time you spend studying is consistent and in brief, but intensive, periods.
